How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Model of a dental crown.

Dental crowns are a very common restorative treatment. They’re useful in a variety of situations! They can strengthen a tooth after a root canal, fit over a misshapen tooth, or complete a dental implant. How long do crowns last?

Are Crowns Permanent?

Dental crowns are not considered a permanent treatment. This is because they can break and wear down over time. Depending on where the crown is and how well you care for your teeth, crowns can last over 15 years! Maintain a good oral hygiene routine (brushing twice a day and flossing) and visit our office for regular cleanings and exams. You can also protect your crown by not chewing ice. Other hard foods like nuts are fine, but you should chew carefully. Crowns can break just like your natural teeth.

What’s the Dental Crown Process Like?

When we’ve decided you need a crown, we’ll make impressions of the affected tooth. This ensures the crown fits perfectly and blends in with the rest of your smile. We might need to do some additional prep, such as shaping your natural tooth a little. A lab creates the crown using the impressions so that it’s a custom fit for your smile. When it’s time to place the crown, we’ll numb your gums so you don’t feel any pain. After these numbing agents wear off, you might feel some discomfort or sensitivity, but that won’t last long. If it continues longer than 2 weeks or if you start feeling pain, please contact us.
