Do’s & Don’ts of Oral Surgery Recovery
Several treatments such as wisdom tooth extraction and dental implants necessitate surgery. The recovery period varies based on the complexity of the procedure, but there are general guidelines to follow.
Recommendations for Oral Surgery Recovery
After undergoing oral surgery, it is advisable to take it easy for the remainder of the day. Depending on the surgery, you may need a few days off for recovery. When lying down, elevate your head with a pillow. To reduce swelling, apply ice to your face for 15 minutes at a time followed by a 15-minute break.
Do not eat until the bleeding stops, then stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and jello for a day or so. Maintaining oral hygiene is crucial to prevent infection, so adhere to the provided instructions. Always take your pain medication as directed.
Things to Avoid During Oral Surgery Recovery
Following your surgery, you may feel relatively normal, but refrain from resuming your regular activities. Even if you feel like exercising, dedicate the first 24 hours to rest. Avoid strenuous workouts or heavy lifting for the next few days. Resting is essential for the healing process.
Proper nutrition is also important. It is recommended to steer clear of hot or overly spicy foods until you feel more like yourself. You can introduce solid foods after approximately 24 hours, but avoid chewing hard or crunchy foods near the surgical site. Additionally, refrain from smoking or consuming alcohol on the first day.
