Easing Pain & Swelling After Dental Procedures

Thanks to life-changing advancements in dental technology, you’ll rarely experience significant pain during a dental visit. However, there are times when a procedure may result in a subsequent period of pain and swelling. In this post, we’ll share some tips that can help you if you experience pain following a dental procedure.

Cold Can Calm

A cold pack, or even a bag of frozen veggies, can provide real comfort if you have any pain and swelling in the mouth. Ice brings down inflammation, easing pain and discomfort. Cold, soft foods like ice cream or pudding can also give you some much needed relief.

Over-the-Counter Pain Medication

An OTC pain relief pill can go a long way in dulling the pain from an oral procedure or surgery. It’s an easy solution, accessible at your local drug store or supermarket. If your dentist feels that you need something stronger, they will prescribe you a limited supply to suit your needs.

Address Any Bleeding

If you experience any bleeding after surgery, addressing it will keep the area healing, working toward clearing up the pain. Have gauze on hand. If there’s bleeding, bite down gently on a piece of gauze.

Keep Your Mouth Clean

Again, you’ll want to do your best to keep the healing process on track. Bacteria in the mouth could leave the area vulnerable to infection, which would cause more pain and inflammation. Continue to brush your teeth during recovery, but do so carefully and gently. It’s also a good idea to swish warm salt water through the mouth during the healing period.
