Wisdom teeth, also known as "third molars," develop in both your upper and lower jaw. While most people have their wisdom teeth emerge between the ages of 17 and 25, they can also come in later. Due to the potential issues they may cause, many individuals require extraction.
How Do You Know When It's Time?
Sign 1: Swollen, red gums
When your wisdom teeth begin to erupt, this process can irritate your gums, leading to swelling and redness. The inflammation may cause some tenderness or discomfort initially.
Sign 2: Gum and jaw pain or discomfort
Pain is your body's way of signaling a problem. Discomfort in your gums, jaw, or the back of your mouth could indicate movement of your wisdom teeth. Chewing might also become uncomfortable.
Sign 3: Changes in tooth alignment
Wisdom teeth can exert pressure on surrounding teeth, causing them to shift or become misaligned. If you observe differences in your bite or tooth alignment, it might be due to your wisdom teeth.
Sign 4: Halitosis
Emerging wisdom teeth can create a gum flap next to the tooth, a potential site for food and bacteria accumulation. This can lead to tooth decay and bad breath.
Sign 5: Sinus problems
While less common, some individuals may experience sinus issues due to upper jaw wisdom teeth exerting pressure on the sinuses. Symptoms may include pain, congestion, and possible infections.
