When is an oral cancer screening recommended?

Scheduling routine screenings are highly encouraged as oral cancer can go undetected until it is advanced. Early detection can improve the chance of successful treatment and provide more treatment options. While these screenings are recommended as part of yearly preventive dental care, this may be recommended if you are experiencing any of the following:

• Persistent Mouth Sores

• Discolored Oral Patches

• Lump or Thickening in the Cheek

How long does the screening take?

Similar to other oral exams, an oral cancer screening is relatively quick! Dr. Park, your local dentist, will go through a checklist to make sure your screening is thoroughly complete. Dr. Park may use tools like a light, mirror, and tongue depressor to look for abnormalities within the mouth. There will also be a physical exam of your jaw, neck, and chin to detect for other any unusual abnormalities.

How often should an oral cancer screening take place?

It is encouraged to take place annually starting at 18. However, if your oral and lifestyle habits include tobacco products, frequent alcohol consumption, or sun exposure, then it may be recommended more often. This screening can make the difference between catching oral cancer early or having fewer treatment options. To encourage a healthy smile, don’t forget to schedule your screenings!
