What is the difference between a dental bridge, a crown, and an implant?

What is the difference between a dental bridge, a crown, and an implant?

Dental crowns are tooth-colored caps that fit over damaged teeth to restore both their functionality and appearance. Dental bridges are essentially three or more crowns that are attached together and used to “bridge” the gap created by one or more missing teeth.

The biggest difference between these restorations and implants is the fact that dental implants are actually surgically implanted into the gums and dental bridges and crowns are not. Dental implants are long-lasting restorations that don’t require much once installed, but dental crowns and bridges have a much shorter healing process and don’t involve oral surgery.

Are dental crowns painful?
Are dental crowns painful?

Local anesthetic is always applied to the gums surrounding the affected tooth, completely numbing the area so that no pain is felt during the procedure. You may feel a little sensitivity or discomfort once the numbness wears off, but it shouldn’t be unbearable by any means. If your pain or discomfort persists for a long time or becomes strong, please contact our office.

Are dental crowns permanent?

Are dental crowns permanent?

Dental crowns typically last for many years, but they are not considered a permanent restoration and may have to be replaced at some point. The best way to extend the longevity of your dental crown is by maintaining a thorough oral care routine and visiting the dentist regularly for routine appointments. While there are no food restrictions that you have to be aware of, we recommend not chewing anything that you wouldn’t chew with natural teeth, like popcorn kernels or ice.

Are dental crowns covered by insurance?
Are dental crowns covered by insurance?

Dental crowns and dental bridges are usually at least partially covered by insurance because they are necessary to protect weak or damaged teeth in many cases. If you have any questions or concerns about financing the cost of your dental crown or bridge, please get in touch with our office.
